1909 Currant Buns

Won fourth prize in the Sunday Times Recipe Contest (reference)

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) flour

  • 3 teaspoonfuls of baking powder

  • ½ pint (300ml) milk

  • ½ teaspoonful of salt

  • ¼ lb (113 g) butter

  • ¼ lb (113 g) moist brown sugar

  • ¼ lb (113 g) fruit - currants, sultanas or raisins

  • 1 egg

Method:

  1. Put flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in bowl and mix well

  2. Melt the butter in the milk and pour over flour mixture. Mix well then add fruit.

  3. Divide the dough into small pieces, shape into buns and place on greased tin

  4. Glaze with beaten egg applied with a feather

  5. Bake in a hot oven on a greased tin
